Commissioner Update #5
Commissioner Update #5
Hello South Lansing family,
It’s been an exciting and productive few weeks across our community — filled with important conversations, incredible events, and personal milestones I’m grateful to share with you all. Here’s a quick recap of what’s been happening:
📊 Youth Detention Facility Feasibility Study
I recently presented information about the Youth Detention Facility Feasibility Study during Adam’s Constituency Meeting. The discussion was lively and full of valuable perspectives — residents shared both support and concerns, which I deeply appreciate.
To continue the dialogue, we hosted a Town Hall on October 18th at Ingham Academy. Thank you to everyone who attended, asked questions, and voiced opinions. Your input is shaping the direction of this important community project.
The Village Lansing Community Event
I had the honor (and the chill!) of participating in the dunk tank at The Village Lansing’s community event to help raise funds for their new gym. I wasn’t alone — the Mayor, Trini, and Mike Lynn also took their turns getting dunked!
It was a fun way to support a great cause, and I’m proud to see our community rally around youth wellness and recreation.
🤠 Michigan Heritage Rodeo at the MSU Pavilion
The Michigan Heritage Rodeo was nothing short of AMAZING! Each night drew a sold-out crowd of over 2,000 people. I even spotted a few familiar faces from South Lansing on Saturday night — it was great connecting and celebrating local culture together.
Although we didn’t get a picture, the memories will stick. Thank you to everyone who came out to represent our city and show support for this statewide event.
🏛️ Commissioner Meeting Highlights (9/23)
We covered a range of important topics at the most recent meeting:
Capital Area District Libraries presented their new 4-year Strategic Plan, including discussions with the city about their downtown location. They also offered to partner with organizations across the county — a great resource for anyone looking to expand educational access.
We heard from students involved in the 4-H Program, who spoke passionately about their hands-on learning experiences. Many have been involved since childhood, and their commitment is inspiring.
A South Lansing community gardener is seeking funding to continue feeding local families. This work directly impacts our neighbors, and I fully support exploring ways to keep it going.
The Pods project will include on-site wraparound services for our unhoused residents and operate for at least 10 years, ensuring long-term support and stability for those who need it most.
Personal Update
On a personal note — I’m happy to share that I recently got married! My wife and I held a beautiful ceremony on the beach in Florida, followed by a cruise celebration with family and friends.
One of the most special moments was seeing my Nana experience her first-ever trip to Florida, her first cruise, and her first time out of the country — a memory I’ll cherish forever.
Thank you, as always, for staying engaged and involved. South Lansing continues to grow stronger through our shared efforts, voices, and vision.
Until next time —
Commissioner Myles Johnson
Ingham County District 5
